Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian has called on the United States to respect Iran’s sovereignty as the two nations prepare for another round of nuclear negotiations next week. The talks, mediated by Oman, are set to take place following discussions held in Oman on Friday.
Pezeshkian stated that Iran’s reasoning on the nuclear issue is based on the principles outlined in the Non-Proliferation Treaty. He emphasized that Iran has always responded with respect, but cannot tolerate language of force. Pezeshkian described the talks as a “step forward” and expressed his administration’s preference for dialogue.
Iranian officials have highlighted the importance of sovereignty and independence, signaling their willingness to engage in nuclear-only negotiations while rejecting military build-up in the region by the US. Chief diplomat Abbas Araghchi stated that Iran has always emphasized its independence since the 1979 revolution.
Araghchi also noted that Iran is unwilling to forego nuclear enrichment for civilian use, even if it leads to increased military attacks from the US and Israel. He stated that negotiations are the only way forward, citing a meeting with US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner in Muscat on Friday.
Iran’s top military commander, Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi, has issued a warning that the entire region will be engulfed in conflict if Iran is attacked. He emphasized that Iran has the necessary power and preparedness for a long-term war with the US.
Meanwhile, average Iranians are expressing skepticism about the talks leading to results, particularly given the country’s struggling economy. Many are left wondering if the negotiations will bring about positive change.
Iran is currently experiencing tense times, with threats of a massive US military strike and ongoing anti-government protests. The nation has not yet overcome the aftermath of nationwide demonstrations that took place last month, which resulted in the deaths of thousands of protesters.
