Iran Reflects on Recent Conflict Amid US Diplomatic Efforts

Tehran Commemorates Anniversary of 12-Day War with Israel

Iran is marking the anniversary of a 12-day conflict between the country and Israel in June 2025. American and Iranian officials are engaged in last-minute negotiations to end a more recent conflict between the two sides.

The talks have led to a shift from a 60-day ceasefire to a potential comprehensive peace and cooperation agreement. However, uncertainty remains over the outcome of the negotiations, particularly regarding Israel’s involvement.

In Tehran, cities are hosting commemorations for senior military commanders killed during the 12-day war, including Mohammad Bagherer, chief of staff of armed forces, Hossein Salami, commander-in-chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and Ali Akbar Hajizadeh, aerospace chief. State-orchestrated messages and banners have been used to honor the commanders.

Universities are also hosting state-run commemorations for nuclear scientists and physicists assassinated during last year’s war, including Mohammad Mehdi Tehranchi.

According to government figures, over 1,000 Iranians were killed in the US-Israeli conflict, while at least 3,468 people have been killed in Iran’s current war with the US and Israel. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will be buried at a Shia shrine in Mashhad on July 28.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has stated that the country refused to meet US demands after the conflict, including zero nuclear enrichment on Iranian soil. He emphasized the need for continued resistance against foreign domination.

The government believes it is in a stronger position compared to last year, having survived two wars and effectively taken control of the Strait of Hormuz. The chief justice of Iran, Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei, has stated that US leaders have yet to understand the ideology and perseverance of the Iranian theological establishment.

The Islamic month of Muharram begins on June 16 and includes the Day of Ashura, which commemorates the death of Husayn ibn Ali. The IRGC Brigadier General, Ali Fadavi, has stated that Iran’s military operation against Israel last year “broke down the hollow might of the enemies.”
