Iran Footballers Pay Tribute to Victims of School Strike During War

Iran National Team Makes Historic Appearance in Match Against Nigeria

The Iran national team played their first match since the start of the Middle East conflict on Friday, facing off against Nigeria in a friendly fixture held in Belek, Turkey. The team wore black armbands and posed with school bags during the pre-match ceremony, which was intended to honor the victims of a recent air strike on a primary school in Minab, southern Iran.

The attack occurred on February 28, resulting in the deaths of at least 170 people, including students and teachers. The incident coincided with the launch of the war by the United States and Israel across Iran. Prior to kickoff, the Iranian players held pink and purple school bags adorned with ribbons.

Iran lost the match 2-1. In a statement following the game, the country’s foreign minister accused the US of carrying out a “calculated, phased assault” on the school. Preliminary findings from a US military investigation suggest that a Tomahawk cruise missile struck the school due to a targeting mistake. According to reports, the US military was bombing an adjacent Iranian base at the time, with the school building formerly being part of that location.

The incident has sparked controversy, with Iran requesting that its World Cup matches be relocated from the United States to Mexico due to concerns over player safety.
