Indonesia hit by deadly floods displacing thousands of people nationwide

Flooding Displaces Thousands in Indonesia’s Aceh Province

At least 1,170 people have lost their lives due to catastrophic flooding in North Sumatra, West Sumatra, and Aceh provinces. The disaster occurred in December, with the hardest-hit region being Aceh province.

Rahmadani and her nine-year-old son Dimas were among those affected. Their rented home was destroyed during the floods, leaving them without a place to stay. Initially, they sought refuge on a roadside before relocating to a tent just metres from their ruined house three weeks later.

According to reports, numerous displaced victims continue to shelter in temporary tents, with many struggling to access medical care. Aceh Tamiang, located in Indonesia’s eastern Aceh province, was particularly affected by the disaster.

Rahmadani expressed concern for her son’s health, stating that he sustained an injury as an infant and is now unable to walk or speak. She noted that before the floods, Dimas received regular medical check-ups, but since then, they have been unable to access healthcare services due to financial constraints.

Dimas’ condition has worsened, with his head swelling and requiring medication and vitamins. Rahmadani stated that while the medication is not expensive, she now lacks the funds to purchase it. She is attempting to earn money to support her son’s care, but for now, he remains in pain.
