World Anti-Doping Agency Targets India’s Performance-Enhancing Drugs Production Industry
The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has launched an initiative to tackle the production of performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) in India, which is the world’s largest producer of these substances. WADA chief Witold Banka and his team have been working with Indian authorities, including the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), to curtail the supply chain of racketeers and agents who peddle PEDs.
Banka stated that India’s production of PEDs is a significant issue, and collaboration with law enforcement agencies is necessary to destroy this market and protect athletes’ lives. WADA has been using its Global Anti-Doping Intelligence and Investigations Network (GAIIN) initiative since 2022 to curb the doping crisis worldwide.
The agency has reported success in curbing doping through “operation upstream,” which involved 250 raids globally, 88 illicit labs dismantled, and almost 90 tonnes of PEDs seized. Gunter Younger, head of investigations for WADA, emphasized that targeting suppliers rather than athletes is crucial in addressing the issue.
WADA’s efforts come as India prepares to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, an event seen as a stepping stone for the country’s ambition of hosting the 2036 Olympics. Banka noted that the number of positive tests in India does not necessarily impact its ability to host these events, but rather highlights the need for improvement in the country’s anti-doping system.
India has been ranked as the top global sports drug cheat for three consecutive years, with 260 out of 7,113 urine and blood samples collected by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) testing positive in 2024. WADA is working to strengthen India’s anti-doping efforts through its collaboration with Indian authorities.
