House Passes War Powers Resolution Against Trump Administration

US House Passes Resolution to Rein in Trump’s Iran War Powers

The United States House of Representatives has passed a resolution to limit President Donald Trump’s authority to attack Iran without congressional approval. The bill, which was approved by 215 votes to 208, marks the first time this year that the House has voted on a war powers resolution and the fourth time overall.

Four Republicans joined Democrats in voting for the measure, with Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky cosponsoring the bill despite his own re-election bid being impacted by Trump’s support. The resolution is unlikely to become law due to the potential for presidential veto.

The vote comes after a series of votes on war powers resolutions this year, and follows a recent cancellation of a scheduled vote on May 21. House Speaker Mike Johnson adjourned the chamber early on that day, but the resolution was picked up again after the Memorial Day recess.

The bill’s passage has been met with support from some Democrats, who have urged their colleagues in the Senate to swiftly pass the measure. Representative Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts stated that “Congress holds the power to declare war—not the executive branch,” while Representative Shontel Brown of Ohio highlighted concerns over the cost and impact on military preparedness.

The conflict between Iran and Israel has been ongoing for 100 days, with estimates suggesting that the US has spent at least $29 billion so far. Some analysts project a higher price tag, potentially exceeding $1 trillion.
