US Government Shutdown Enters Third Partial Shutdown Under Trump Administration
The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has entered a partial government shutdown due to a lack of funding. The shutdown began on Saturday and will continue until the DHS is funded.
As part of the shutdown, some agencies under the DHS have been affected, including the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and the US coastguard. At US airports, 2,933 of the TSA’s 64,130 employees have been furloughed.
The shutdown is related to ongoing negotiations between Republicans and Democrats in Congress. The parties are at an impasse over funding for the DHS, which has led to a partial shutdown.
In response to recent fatal shootings of US citizens by federal officers during immigration operations, some Democrats have called for increased oversight of the DHS’s immigration operations. They have also requested changes to the agency’s policies and procedures.
The FBI has refused to share evidence with state law enforcement in Minnesota following one of the shootings. State officials have expressed concern over this lack of cooperation.
Democrats have sent a list of 10 demands to Republicans, which includes increased oversight of the DHS, requirements for verification before placing individuals in immigration detention, and prohibitions on immigration enforcement actions near certain locations such as courts, schools, and polling places.
The shutdown has affected various aspects of government operations, including those related to national security and public safety. The situation remains unresolved as Congress is currently in recess until February 23.
