Severe Weather Conditions Hit Displaced Palestinians in Gaza
Heavy winter rains and strong winds have brought new challenges to displaced Palestinians in Gaza, exacerbating their already dire living conditions. The territory has been ravaged by Israel’s ongoing conflict for over two years, with the Israeli government continuing to restrict critical shelter and aid supplies.
On Monday, flimsy tents were flooded and makeshift camps engulfed in mud due to heavy rainfall, further straining the resources of those already struggling to survive. Officials have warned that severe weather conditions pose additional risks, including disease and illness, as contaminated sewage systems contaminate floodwaters.
A 30-year-old woman was killed when a partially destroyed wall collapsed onto her tent in the Remal neighborhood, according to reports. At least 15 people, including three babies, have died this month from hypothermia following the rains and plummeting temperatures.
Residents are struggling to navigate flooded areas, which also contain sewage and rubbish. A team of municipal workers is working to pump sewage from the overwhelmed network. Aid groups are calling for increased pressure on Israel to lift restrictions on life-saving aid deliveries into Gaza, citing a shortage of supplies that falls short of international requirements.
Despite the ongoing ceasefire, Israeli attacks on Palestinians have continued in Gaza. On Monday, three Palestinians were injured when Israeli forces targeted the Jabalia camp in northern Gaza. Witnesses reported an Israeli air raid on the eastern areas of the Bureij camp and further attacks east of Gaza City.
The situation remains dire for displaced Palestinians in Gaza, with many forced to live in flimsy tents and makeshift structures due to Israel’s destruction of an estimated 80% of buildings in the territory.
