Has the fight against al-Shabab failed?

UN Experts Warn of Ongoing Threat from Al-Shabab

A recent assessment by United Nations experts has reaffirmed the continued threat posed by al-Shabab, a militant group linked to al-Qaeda, in Somalia and neighboring countries. The group’s control over significant areas of southern and central Somalia has allowed it to carry out attacks on government forces, security personnel, and civilians.

According to UN sources, al-Shabab has claimed responsibility for attacks in Kenya, Uganda, and Djibouti, highlighting its reach beyond Somalia’s borders. Despite efforts by Somali and international forces to combat the group’s operations, al-Shabab remains a significant threat to regional stability.

Experts point to the group’s ability to adapt and continue striking despite military efforts as a major factor in its enduring presence. Researcher Afyare Elmi notes that the group’s tactics have allowed it to evade detection and maintain its operational capacity over time.

The reasons behind the ongoing struggle against al-Shabab are complex, with analysts attributing the group’s resilience to various factors, including its control of territory, funding, and support networks. Abdullahi Halakhe, a Horn of Africa security analyst, suggests that addressing these underlying factors will be crucial in ultimately defeating the group.

The threat posed by al-Shabab remains a pressing concern for Somalia, Kenya, and other regional countries, with UN experts emphasizing the need for sustained cooperation to counter this menace.
