Guatemalan Prison Riots Result in Hostage Situation at Three Facilities

Guatemala Detention Center Riots: 46 Workers Held Hostage

At least 46 workers have been taken hostage in riots across three detention centers in Guatemala, according to authorities. The incidents began on Saturday and appear to be coordinated by members of the Barrio 18 gang.

The Interior Ministry reported that the unrest was a direct reaction to its decision to revoke privileges from gang leaders. According to Marco Antonio Villeda, the Interior Minister, those behind the riots are members of the Barrio 18 gang.

The hostages include mostly guards, as well as a psychologist and other personnel. A perimeter has been formed around the Renovacion 1 maximum security prison in Escuintla, with ambulances and firetrucks on standby to intervene if necessary.

Inmates at the prison have expressed concerns about their safety, stating that they are not secure within the facility. One inmate, speaking from behind barbed wire, said: “They can’t even guarantee their own security, so how are they supposed to guarantee ours?”

Guatemala has faced challenges in controlling its prison population in recent years due to gang influence. Inmates have reported harsh and dangerous conditions.

The situation is being closely monitored by authorities, with efforts underway to regain control of the prison system.
