Greenland’s Foreign Minister to Meet US Secretary of State Amid US Threats
Vivian Motzfeldt, Greenland’s foreign minister, stated on Friday that her country should “take the lead” in planned talks with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The discussions come as the United States has expressed interest in taking over Greenland, a self-governing territory of Denmark.
Motzfeldt emphasized that Greenlandic government should engage in dialogue with other countries independently of Denmark. She noted that her country shares common values and policies with the United States, but did not specify what these shared interests are.
The planned meeting between Motzfeldt and Rubio is scheduled to take place next week, although it is unclear whether the Danish foreign minister will attend without her counterpart, Lars Lokke Rasmussen. Motzfeldt declined to comment on this possibility, stating only that the talks will be held jointly.
US President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated his desire to take over Greenland, citing its strategic importance in the Arctic region and concerns about Russia or China occupying it. Trump claimed that the US needs to take over Greenland to prevent these countries from becoming neighbors.
Recent US actions, including attacks on Venezuela and the abduction of its president, have raised concerns about Trump’s intentions for Greenland. NATO officials have sought to deflect Washington’s interest in the territory by emphasizing efforts to boost security in the Arctic.
Greenland’s foreign minister expressed “good expectations” for her meeting with Rubio but noted that it is too early to determine the outcome. She reiterated the need for a return to trust-based relations between Greenland and the United States.
