Grammy Awards ceremony to feature protest against immigration enforcement policies

Grammy Awards Ceremony Sees Artists Express Disapproval of ICE Raids

Several Grammy Award winners used their acceptance speeches to express disapproval of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids. The artists, including Bad Bunny and Billie Eilish, wore badges reading “ICE OUT” on the red carpet.

Bad Bunny, who won a Grammy for his album Debi Tirar Mas Fotos, stated that he is not an immigrant but rather an American citizen. He also expressed outrage over the ICE raids, which have led to widespread protests and resulted in several deaths.

Billie Eilish received an award for her song “Wildflower” and used her speech to express disapproval of ICE. She stated that no one is illegal on stolen land.

Other artists, including Damian Kulash from OK Go and Justin Vernon from Bon Iver, also expressed their disapproval of the situation. Kulash stated that feeling joyful at the event felt irresponsible due to the government’s actions against its own people. Vernon wore a whistle to honor legal observers documenting federal agents’ actions on the streets.

Industry leaders have faced criticism for not allowing artists to express their political views freely. Jess Morales Rocketto, executive director of Latino advocacy group Maremoto, stated that the show of outrage was more than just a red carpet moment.

The Grammy Awards ceremony has sparked attention from Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who warned that federal agents would be present at Bad Bunny’s upcoming Super Bowl performance.
