Rafah Border Crossing Reopens as Part of US-Brokered Ceasefire
The Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt has reopened following a months-long closure. The crossing was previously shut down due to Israel’s military operation in the Gaza Strip. The reopening is part of a ceasefire agreement brokered by the United States.
As a result of the war, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza has worsened. The Egyptian government had closed the border crossing to prevent further damage and ensure public safety. However, with the ceasefire in place, the crossing has been reopened for limited movement.
According to reports, only a small number of individuals are allowed to enter or leave the Gaza Strip at present. These include medical evacuees and others who require urgent assistance. However, humanitarian aid and construction materials remain barred from entering the Strip due to security concerns.
The reopening of the border crossing has raised hopes among Palestinians that it may alleviate some of the suffering caused by the war. The situation in Gaza remains dire, with widespread destruction and a significant shortage of essential supplies.
Guests on Al Jazeera English’s program discussed the implications of the ceasefire agreement and its potential impact on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
