French Activists Accuse Israeli Authorities of Abuse and Torture
A preliminary investigation has been launched by French anti-terrorism prosecutors into alleged “torture” and “war crimes” committed by Israeli authorities against French activists who participated in a Gaza-bound aid flotilla last month. The probe was initiated following a referral from the foreign ministry, which received reports of severe mistreatment during detention.
On May 18, Israeli forces intercepted approximately 430 activists from around 40 countries in international waters as they attempted to break the blockade on Gaza. Eight French activists returned to France on May 22, with two still hospitalized in Turkey. Several reported experiencing violent and humiliating treatment, including being groped and slapped by a soldier while in detention.
French anti-terrorism prosecutors have confirmed that lawyers for the flotilla activists plan to file separate complaints alleging rape, torture, and humiliation. The Israeli prison service has denied the allegations, stating they are “entirely without factual basis.”
The incident has sparked international attention, with several countries condemning Israel’s actions. France banned National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir from entry following his posting of a video mocking flotilla activists while they were bound.
According to Adalah, an Israeli legal center for Palestinian rights, the allegations appear to be one of the most severe cases of mistreatment documented in recent years. The Global Sumud Flotilla has reported at least 15 cases of sexual abuse among participants.
