Florida Bar denies investigation into Trump lawyer Lindsey Halligan

Florida Bar Clarifies Statement on Lindsey Halligan Investigation

The Florida Bar has issued a clarification regarding its previous statement indicating an investigation into Lindsey Halligan, a former US attorney under President Donald Trump. In February, the bar association acknowledged monitoring concerns about Halligan’s work in the Trump administration and stated that an investigation was pending.

However, in a recent statement, Jennifer Krell Davis, a spokesperson for the Florida Bar, denied any probe. The bar has withdrawn its previous letter and called it “erroneous.”

Halligan had been appointed as interim US attorney in September, following the firing of her predecessor, Erik Siebert. She was criticized for using prosecutorial powers, particularly after posting on social media suggesting that several critics, including New York Attorney General Letitia James and US Senator Adam Schiff, would be charged.

Five days later, Halligan filed three criminal indictments against Trump’s critics: Comey, James, and John Bolton. The defendants had all been publicly critical of Trump and characterized their prosecutions as politically motivated. They each pleaded not guilty.

Critics accused Halligan of eroding the independence of the Department of Justice and wielding its powers for personal aims. A magistrate judge ruled that there was a “reasonable basis” to believe that Halligan’s handling of evidence in Comey’s case was improper, while another judge dismissed both Comey’s and James’ cases, ruling that Halligan had been illegally appointed.

Halligan eventually stepped down as US attorney on January 20, following pressure. The Florida Bar’s clarification has clarified the status of any investigation into Halligan’s work.
