FIFA Reports Increase in Goals Scored from Outside Penalty Area at World Cup

The number of goals scored from outside the penalty area has increased significantly at the current World Cup in North America, according to data released by FIFA’s Technical Study Group (TSG). The proportion of goals scored from outside the box has doubled compared to the previous tournament in Qatar. As of Saturday, 16% of the goals scored in this World Cup came from outside the penalty area, up from 8% at the 2022 tournament.

Experts attribute the increase to a trend of teams defending in a low bloc and pushing opponents to take shots from long range. The large number of players in and around the box also makes it more difficult for goalkeepers to track the ball from afar. According to Jurgen Klinsmann, a member of FIFA’s TSG, this setup creates opportunities for shots from outside the penalty area.

The quality of these shots has been notable, with many resulting in goals. Argentina, in particular, have relied on long-range shots to break down sides that are sitting deep. The team has scored five goals from outside the box, including a spectacular screamer by Enzo Fernandez in their semifinal match against England. Other teams, such as France and Switzerland, have also seen success with shots from distance.

The data highlights the changing nature of modern football, where teams are increasingly looking to exploit space on the pitch and create scoring opportunities from outside the penalty area.
