FIFA Discrimination Report Sparks Call for Israeli Ban from Palestinian Football Association

FIFA Imposes Fine on Israel Football Association for Breaches of Anti-Discrimination Obligations

The Palestinian Football Association (PFA) has reported to FIFA that the Israeli Football Association (IFA) has breached its anti-discrimination obligations, leading to a fine of 150,000 Swiss francs ($190,700). The IFA was found to have “multiple breaches” of its obligations, according to a report by the disciplinary committee.

The PFA is seeking further action, including expulsion from international institutions. Jibril Rajoub, chief of the PFA and head of the Palestinian Olympic Committee, stated that the fine “falls short of the minimum required”. He cited the IFA’s alleged racist nature, criminal activity by some Israeli sports officials, and the inclusion of football clubs from Israeli West Bank settlements as grounds for a ban.

A recent report found that the IFA failed to take meaningful action against Beitar Jerusalem for persistent racist behavior. Rajoub described Beitar Jerusalem as an example of racism, fascism, and discrimination, stating that such attitudes are commonplace in Israeli football clubs.

The PFA also alleged that some Israeli sports officials participated in or supported violence during Israel’s conflict with Gaza, resulting in the deaths of 1,007 athletes and coaches and damage to 265 sports facilities. The IFA has denied allegations that its member clubs based in occupied West Bank settlements were taking part in Israel’s leagues.

The UN has condemned Israeli settlements in the West Bank as illegal under international law. The IFA is a member of UEFA, European football’s governing body.
