European Leaders Criticize Trumps Tariff Threat as Unnecessary and Counterproductive

Eight European countries, including Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, have issued a joint statement condemning US President Donald Trump’s threat to impose tariffs on their nations in response to his bid to acquire Greenland.

The eight countries stated that they “stand in full solidarity” with Denmark and the people of Greenland, a semi-autonomous Danish territory. They expressed their commitment to upholding their sovereignty and territorial integrity, warning that tariff threats could lead to a “dangerous downward spiral” in transatlantic relations.

European officials are preparing for emergency talks to coordinate a response to Trump’s pressure campaign over Greenland’s future. The European Council President, Antonio Costa, has confirmed that the bloc is united in defending its national sovereignty and will take measures to counter any form of coercion.

The eight countries targeted by Trump face a 10% tariff from February 1, rising to 25% from June 1, unless a deal is reached for the US to purchase Greenland. The European Union is considering imposing tariffs worth €93 billion on US goods and activating the Anti-Coercion Instrument, which would restrict investments and intellectual property protections for foreign firms.

Trump has insisted on controlling Greenland, sparking concerns about the future of NATO and transatlantic relations. Denmark has ruled out selling Greenland, and opinion polls suggest that the island’s residents do not wish to be part of the US. Thousands of protesters took to the streets in Danish cities to rally against Trump’s threats, with chants of “Greenland is not for sale” and banners reading “Hands off Greenland”.

European leaders have expressed their commitment to upholding European sovereignty, with French President Emmanuel Macron stating that “tariff threats are unacceptable and have no place in this context”. UK Prime Minister has yet to comment on the matter.
