Elon Musks trial against Sam Altman set to expose OpenAI power dynamics

High-Stakes Trial Set to Begin Over AI Development Dispute

A high-profile trial is scheduled to begin on Monday with jury selection, pitting two prominent figures in the technology industry against each other. Elon Musk and Sam Altman, co-founders of OpenAI, are set to face off in a civil lawsuit that centers on the development of artificial intelligence.

The dispute began in 2015 when OpenAI was founded as a nonprofit start-up primarily funded by Musk. However, the company has since evolved into a for-profit venture valued at $852 billion. The trial’s outcome could have significant implications for the balance of power in AI research and development.

Musk filed the lawsuit in August 2024, alleging that Altman and OpenAI’s top lieutenant, Greg Brockman, had strayed from the company’s founding mission to prioritize profit over altruism. Musk claims that he was kept in the dark about their plans and that they exploited his financial support to create a “wealth machine” for themselves.

The lawsuit seeks damages, as well as for OpenAI to revert to a nonprofit status and for Altman and Brockman to be removed from their positions. The trial also carries risks for Musk, who was recently held liable by another jury for defrauding investors during his takeover of Twitter in 2022.

Internal documents revealed in court include a personal diary entry by Brockman, which details his concerns about working with Musk. The trial is expected to shed light on the inner workings of OpenAI and the dynamics between its co-founders.
