Cuba reports fifth fatality in confrontation with Florida-bound speedboat

Cuba Announces Death of Fifth Person Injured in Fatal Shooting

Havana, Cuba - The Cuban government has confirmed that Roberto Alvarez Avila died on March 4 as a result of injuries sustained during a fatal shootout involving a speedboat off the island’s north coast. According to the Ministry of Interior, Avila was one of the six people wounded by the boat’s gunfire.

On February 26, authorities reported that Cuban soldiers confronted a speedboat carrying 10 people as it approached the island. The vessel allegedly opened fire on the troops, killing four people and wounding six others. The passengers were identified as armed Cubans living in the United States who were attempting to infiltrate the island.

The Cuban Interior Ministry stated that “new elements” have been obtained during investigations, which suggest the involvement of other individuals based in the US. Six suspects have already been charged with terrorism related to the incident.

The speedboat was found to contain a range of items, including 12 high-powered weapons, over 12,800 pieces of ammunition, and 11 pistols. The boat’s registration number has been provided by Cuban authorities, although verification is not possible due to Florida state regulations.

The shooting has raised tensions between the US and Cuba, particularly in light of recent developments involving Venezuela’s oil supply. The situation remains under investigation.
