Colombia Cooperates with US Amid Insults and Threats from Petro

Colombian President Gustavo Petro Emphasizes Importance of Dialogue in Venezuela Crisis

In an interview with Al Jazeera’s Teresa Bo, Colombian President Gustavo Petro stressed the need for open communication with the United States. The conversation came after a phone call between Petro and US President Donald Trump on Wednesday, which marked a direct line of communication that did not previously exist.

Petro stated that his government is committed to maintaining cooperation on combating narcotics with Washington. He acknowledged that previous information exchange had been limited due to unofficial channels “mediated by political ideology and opposition.” Despite Trump’s recent threats of military action against Colombia, Petro emphasized the importance of continued cooperation.

Trump had previously accused Petro of running cocaine mills and called him a “sick man.” In response, Petro vowed to defend his country, stating that he would take up arms for his homeland. The Colombian president has been critical of Israel’s US-backed actions in Gaza and had his US visa revoked after speaking at a pro-Palestine march.

Petro warned that Venezuela, which shares a border with Colombia, could face violence in the post-Maduro era. He proposed a shared government through dialogue among all political forces in Venezuela, leading to elections. Petro has spoken to Venezuela’s interim President Delcy Rodriguez and sensed her concerns about the country’s future.

The Colombian president also acknowledged that she is facing attacks, including accusations of betrayal. Petro emphasized the need for unity among Venezuelan forces, stating that “some accuse her of betrayal” as a narrative designed to divide the opposition.
