Colleague remembers Gaza journalist killed in Israeli conflict

Al Jazeera Journalist Ahmed Wishah Killed in Israeli Air Attack

A 25-year-old Palestinian journalist, Ahmed Samir Mohammed Wishah, was killed on Saturday in an Israeli air attack on the Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza. This marks the 12th Al Jazeera journalist to be killed by Israel in Gaza since October 2023.

Wishah worked as a cameraman for Al Jazeera Mubasher and had gained prominence during the Gaza war by accompanying his late brother, an Al Jazeera Mubasher correspondent who was killed on April 8. The two brothers formed a media duo that documented the suffering of the Palestinian people and the unfolding events of the war.

According to reports, Wishah’s brother Mohammed was also killed in deliberate Israeli shelling of his car weeks ago. At least 260 Palestinian journalists have been killed since Israel launched its military operation in October 2023, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.

Talal Mahmoud, an Al Jazeera Mubasher correspondent in Gaza, recalled Wishah’s dedication to his brother and their shared work. “I’ve known Ahmed since the beginning of the war,” Mahmoud said. “He was always present, accompanying his brother Mohammed in the tent where he stayed.”

Khaled al-Shatli, another Al Jazeera Mubasher cameraman, described Wishah as a gentle soul with beautiful manners. “When you talk about Ahmed Wishah, you are talking about a polite and highly moral young man,” al-Shatli said.

The Israeli military has not commented on the killing of Wishah or provided any information on its actions in Gaza.
