Three British Naval Crew Killed in Helicopter Crash
A fatal accident occurred during a training exercise near Sourton, Devon, on Wednesday morning. The incident involved a helicopter and resulted in the deaths of three British naval crew members.
According to the UK Ministry of Defence, the crash took place at approximately 4:00am (03:00 GMT) during a training exercise in the area. A spokesperson for the Royal Navy confirmed that the accident occurred near the village of Sourton.
The Ministry of Defence announced the news on social media, stating that “our thoughts and sympathies are with their families and friends” at this time. Local police were reported to be present at the scene, where they stated that the incident was ongoing and would provide further updates as necessary.
An investigation into the crash is currently underway, led by General Gwyn Jenkin, the head of the navy. The Ministry of Defence has requested a “period of grace” for the families of the victims before releasing additional information about the circumstances surrounding the accident.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed that he was following the incident and stated that more information would be provided as soon as possible. Several naval bases, including HMNB Devonport, are located in the vicinity of where the helicopter crashed.
