Bangladesh to decide on memorial for Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus

Bangladesh’s Interim Leader Muhammad Yunus Steps Down After 18 Months

Dhaka, Bangladesh - As the country prepares for its February 12 election, former interim leader Muhammad Yunus is set to leave office after a tumultuous 18-month tenure. During his time in power, Yunus aimed to restore a credible electoral process and implement reforms to prevent authoritarian rule.

Yunus, who took over as interim leader following the August 2024 uprising that toppled longtime leader Sheikh Hasina, faced criticism from various vested interest groups. Rubel Chaklader, a Dhaka resident, expressed his disappointment with Yunus’s inability to deliver substantial changes during his tenure. “We missed the opportunity,” Chaklader said. “We didn’t let Dr Yunus work properly.”

Chaklader’s sentiments are echoed by some student leaders who spearheaded the 2024 uprising. Nahid Islam, a prominent student leader, stated that Yunus was chosen due to his global stature and domestic reputation as a civil society leader. However, there were also reservations within state institutions, including the military.

Yunus initially hesitated to take on the role, stating he was “not a political person.” Nevertheless, he stepped in during the crisis, citing a sense of obligation. Political scientist Ali Riaz noted that Yunus felt a commitment to step forward and address the country’s institutional collapse.

As Bangladesh heads towards its first free and fair elections in over a decade, debates over Yunus’s legacy are already underway. The question remains whether he was able to deliver on his promises or fell short of expectations.
