Austria beats Jordan 3-1 in World Cup opener

Austria Defeat Jordan in FIFA World Cup Opener

Austria secured a 3-1 victory over debutant team Jordan in their Group J opener at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday. The match saw Austria return to the tournament after a 28-year absence.

Jordan took an early lead through Romano Schmid’s 20-minute thunderbolt, but Austria equalized five minutes into the second half when Ali Olwan scored inside the far post. However, Austria regained the lead in the 69th minute with a goal from Marko Arnautovic, who also scored a penalty in stoppage time after Saleem Obeid was penalized for handball.

The match ended with Jordan’s own goal, which deflected Marcel Sabitzer’s corner into his own net seven minutes after Austria’s equalizer. The victory lifted Austria to second place in Group J, behind Argentina, who took the top spot after a 3-0 win over Algeria earlier on Tuesday.

Group standings currently have Argentina leading, followed by Austria and Jordan. Algeria is at the bottom of the group. The FIFA World Cup is set to begin on June 11.
