Australian Open: Jannik Sinner and Naomi Osaka Advance to Third Round
Jannik Sinner has defeated James Duckworth 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 to reach the third round of the Australian Open. The Italian world number two won his 27th consecutive tour-level victory against an Australian player, having last lost to Duckworth in Toronto in 2021.
Sinner’s performance was characterized by his controlled power and placement on the court. He broke Duckworth’s serve twice, including with a backhand winner in the fourth game, and claimed the first set in 26 minutes. Although Duckworth offered more resistance in the second set, Sinner’s advantage proved too great.
Naomi Osaka has also advanced to the third round, defeating Sorana Cirstea 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. Osaka struggled early, dropping the opening game on her serve and committing errors. However, she recovered to break Cirstea twice in the first set and again at 5-3 lead.
Cirstea took an early lead in the second set but Osaka levelled at 2-2 before breaking again. The Romanian broke back in a decisive moment to force a final set. Osaka responded by increasing her intensity, overwhelming Cirstea with her ground strokes to seal the win.
Sinner will face American Eliot Spizzirri in the third round, while Osaka will play Australian qualifier Maddison Inglis.
