Australian Teenager Charged Over Alleged Online Threats Against Israeli President Isaac Herzog
A 19-year-old Australian has been charged with making online threats against Israeli President Isaac Herzog, who is set to visit the country on Sunday. The alleged threats were made on a social media platform last month and targeted a foreign head of state and internationally protected person.
The teenager was refused police bail and will appear before a court in Sydney on Thursday. The offence carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in jail, according to Australian Federal Police.
Herzog’s visit has been met with planned protests across Australia, as well as concerns over alleged war crimes committed by Israel during its conflict with Gaza since October 7, 2023. Pro-Palestine groups and those opposing Israel’s actions have expressed strong opposition to the visit.
The Australian government extended restrictions on protests in advance of Herzog’s visit, citing concerns about “significant animosity” towards the president. The Palestine Action Group has called for a rally in Sydney on Monday, urging supporters to attend a peaceful gathering at the New South Wales state parliament.
Several legal groups have also urged the Australian Federal Police to investigate Herzog over alleged war crimes committed by Israel during its conflict with Gaza. These groups include the Australian Centre for International Justice, Al-Haq, and the Al Mezan Center for Human Rights.
Herzog is expected to meet with survivors and the families of victims of a shooting at a Jewish festival in Sydney’s Bondi Beach in December. His visit has been met with opposition from various groups, who have expressed concerns about his presence in Australia.
