Arsenal Secure Nervy Win Over Chelsea with Set-Piece Goals
Arsenal secured a 2-1 victory over London rivals Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium, with goals from William Saliba and Jurrien Timber. The match was marked by the importance of set pieces in the Premier League, as both teams struggled to contain the threat of corners.
The Gunners took an early lead through Saliba’s first goal since December 2024, but Chelsea drew level just before halftime on a corner kick from Reece James. However, Arsenal regained the lead with Timber’s second-half header, which sealed a crucial win for the Premier League leaders.
Chelsea’s third consecutive game without a win was a setback for their bid to qualify for next season’s Champions League. The Blues dropped to sixth place after losing to Arsenal for the third time in Liam Rosenior’s brief reign.
Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta’s side has reestablished their five-point lead over second-placed Manchester City, who have a game in hand and had closed the gap with a 1-0 victory at Leeds on Saturday. The Gunners’ second successive league win has also set them up for a potentially decisive trip to Manchester City on April 18.
Chelsea’s struggles were compounded by the sending off of Pedro Neto for a second booking, which left the team vulnerable to Arsenal’s counterattacks. The match marked another significant victory for Arsenal in their bid to win a first English title since 2004.
The Gunners have just one match left in England’s top-flight football league against sides currently in the top six, and will travel to Brighton on Wednesday with nine games left in their title bid.
