British Columbia Sues OpenAI Over Handling of Troubling School Shooter Interactions

A Canadian provincial government is taking tech giant OpenAI to court, alleging that the company failed to report concerns about a school shooter’s interactions with its chatbot service to law enforcement. The lawsuit, filed in a British Columbia court, claims that OpenAI knew or should have known about suspicious conversations between the shooter and its ChatGPT AI platform, but did not take adequate steps to prevent further harm. According to the complaint, the shooter had been using ChatGPT to discuss violent fantasies and plan his attack on Tumbler Ridge Elementary School. The shooter ultimately killed five people and injured one before being apprehended by police. The lawsuit alleges that OpenAI’s failure to report these interactions to law enforcement constituted a breach of its obligations under Canadian human rights and privacy laws. “This was not just an isolated incident, but rather a symptom of a broader problem with tech companies failing to take responsibility for the harm their products can cause,” said the provincial government in a statement.
